Ethereum: Trying to use Block Erupters with Ubuntu 13.04

I’m trying to mine Ethereum on my Ubuntu 13.04 system, and unfortunately it’s a disappointing experience. I installed everything needed for Bitcoin mining, including the latest version of Bitcoin-Qt, cgminer and bfgminer. However, after setting up Block Erupters, which are supposed to be compatible with these miners, my system struggles to boot.

As soon as I try to connect the Block Erupter USB hub to my Ubuntu 13.04, the system crashes or freezes. The error message indicates that there was a problem with the block erupter itself, but I double-checked its installation and configuration. It seems that something is wrong.

My question: Can anyone confirm that Block Erupters is compatible with Ubuntu 13.04? Have others successfully used them to mine Ethereum on this system?

I’d love to hear from fellow miners who have tried the Block Erupter setup, as well as any troubleshooting tips or workarounds I might have to try before abandoning my project.

Update: After some research and trial and error, it looks like I was right in assuming the problem was Block Erupter. However, I found a workaround: using the librethorpe package instead of the original Block Erupter software. This modified version seems to be compatible with Ubuntu 13.04.

If anyone has successfully used Block Erupters on their system or knows of any workarounds for this problem, please share your experience in the comments below!
